Rigoletto
October 10, 2021 @ 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm EDT
Italian blockbuster!
Traditional grand opera at its best with love, betrayal, and sacrifice.
If you love catchy tunes like “La donna e mobile”, chorus and melodrama, this is for you. Artistic Advisor Francesco Milioto (Chicago Lyric Opera, Santa Fe Opera) debuts at the Florentine in this traditional production with a modern touch. Victor Hugo’s play inspired this early Verdi masterpiece.
Todd Thomas and Jessica Jones tug at our heartstrings as the hunchbacked jester Rigoletto and his sheltered daughter Gilda. Scott Quinn, as the licentious Duke and a true villain, seduces Gilda as one of a long line of conquests. Rising superpower Olivia Vote (Metropolitan Opera) wows as Maddalena. The opera’s original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to a curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier who’s daughter the Duke has seduced with Rigoletto’s encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke and sacrifices her life to save him from the assassin hired by her father.
